Web Analytics / Telemetry
Web Analytics and Log File Analysis are tools that can answer many questions, from specific e-commerce goal tracking to broad analysis of user behaviors. While there are many statistics that can be garnered, in my experience the largest part of an effective web analytics effort is assessing what information is needed by those using the report and what information can be gathered given the constraints of technology and audience.
Generally, such efforts break down into rounds of questions that begin with initial discovery. Once the ground work has been laid and the constraints of the systems have been outlined, more detailed analysis can proceed. This work may also include changes to server or analytics tools to ensure that data is more rigorously recorded for all future efforts.
This analysis should be used to create concise recurring reports that allow a site owner to easily gauge how changes to the site affect users and usage.
